The Shinkansen is one of Japan's great pleasures: punctual, quiet and wonderfully simple once you understand the sequence. The most useful decision is made before you arrive at the station: reserve the seat, luggage space and departure that suit your actual day.
Buying Tickets
For Tokyo-Kyoto, choose the Tokaido Shinkansen. You can buy tickets at a staffed JR ticket office, a machine, or through an official reservation service. A reserved seat is worth the modest premium during weekends, holidays and peak blossom or autumn periods. Keep the paper ticket or digital confirmation accessible until you exit at your destination.
Choosing Seats
For the classic Mount Fuji possibility when traveling Tokyo to Kyoto, select a window seat on the right-hand side of the train. Returning toward Tokyo, choose the left. The view is never guaranteed, but the choice costs nothing when you reserve early. Green Car is quieter and more spacious; ordinary reserved seats are entirely comfortable for most travelers.
Luggage Rules
Oversized baggage, generally between 160 and 250 cm in total dimensions, requires a reserved seat with an oversized-baggage area. Measure your suitcase before travel. Smaller cases fit overhead or between seats, but avoid bringing more than you can lift onto the rack yourself. A compact suitcase or soft-sided case makes station transfers much easier.
At the Station
Arrive 20 to 30 minutes early. Find the correct platform, buy an ekiben if you want a station lunch, and board only when the platform markings show your car number. Let passengers exit before boarding. Once seated, keep voices low and your phone on silent; the quiet is part of the experience.
Make It Pleasant

- Buy water and a light meal before boarding.
- Keep valuables in a small day bag rather than the overhead case.
- Use the journey to reset instead of turning it into another work session.
